Visually, the Dark Knight himself and Gotham as a whole have never looked better (we're still not sold on the shaven-headed character design for Robin though), and the leap to PS4 and Xbox One has allowed for one of the most impressive gaming environments ever seen. Ultimately, annoyances with plot points and boss fights and awful races aside, Arkham Knight is an excellent total package. In every other section of the game, Batman will figure out some way to escape from traps or dangerous situations, but as soon as the Riddler lowers him into a hazard-filled stunt race, he happily roars around the track? And that's to say nothing of the tracks themselves, which feel almost like some gothic twist on Mario Kart, with zig-zagging routes and variable features. They fit neither the style of the game, nor the narrative.

We didn't care for them in an earlier hands-on preview, and we're even more convinced they're a bad idea in the full game. Where the Batmobile feels totally shoehorned in though are the Riddler race tracks. The downside is, that beefy nature makes it feel out of place at times. The thing is a beast, and so technologically advanced that there are more than a few militaries that would like a hangar full of them. Batman's set of wheels is repeatedly referred to as a tank by the nameless goons infesting Gotham, and they're not wrong. With the Batmobile itself - it's impossible to look at Arkham Knight and not consider the vehicle's impact on the game - Rocksteady have taken influence from the Tumbler of Nolan's trilogy more than any of the sleek vehicles found in comics or animation. Other "keynote" battles frustrate for similar reasons - Rocksteady try working in a new mechanic or set-up for that particular moment, ruining the flow and any skill you may feel you have from the rest of the game. In this instance, you're underground, awkwardly trying to navigate narrow routes, and a single hit of the drill will wipe you out. A particularly irritating section in the Batmobile, escaping from a giant drill piloted by the mysterious Arkham Knight, will likely send controllers through screens. It's one of the few games where you'll get more enjoyment out of not engaging the enemy than wading in batarangs blazing.Įlsewhere, notably with setpieces and what pass for boss fights, the game falters. Batman's "predator" moveset might be even more satisfying though, allowing you to scope out an area and work out silent takedowns or ways to dispatch entire teams from the shadows before the first punch is even thrown. Its melee combat is sublime, an evolution of the last entry with smooth combos, environmental takedowns, and team-up finishing moves, allowing you to dispatch even bigger squads of enemies in quick time. It's also a little tiresome to see Oracle, Batman's tech wizard ally and Commissioner Gordon's daughter, fill a "damsel in distress" role for at least part of the game.Īs the game opens up and figures such as Nightwing, Robin, and Catwoman join the fray, you start forgiving Arkham Knight some of its narrative shortcomings.

As a result, there will be areas that leave anyone who didn't brush up on Arkham Asylum or City scratching their heads, which is perhaps less than ideal for the first - and last - entry in the series on new gen consoles. That presumed familiarity filters into the story too, with Scarecrow's plan to unleash a powerful new fear toxin across Gotham and the arrival of the eponymous new villain almost taking a backseat to the continuity and fallout of the first two games. Newcomers will feel competent in short order, and it's pleasing that Rocksteady respects their audience enough not to hold their hand too much.

Even the newer abilities are rolled out at a pretty rapid pace, and soon enough you're running around Gotham like a pro. Arkham Knight presupposes you've played the earlier games, and doesn't waste time with overly elaborate tutorials or forcing you to re-acquire everything you'd earned by the end of Arkham City. Batman himself (once again perfectly voiced by Kevin Conroy) is at the peak of his abilities.
